Breaking free from social media

Found on Tildes immediately after deactivating my Threads and Bluesky accounts, "We can have a different web" by Molly White. Talking about the best parts of the early web:

The thing is: none of this is gone. Nothing about the web has changed that prevents us from going back. If anything, it's become a lot easier. We can return. Better, yet: we can restore the things we loved about the old web while incorporating the wonderful things that have emerged since, developing even better things as we go forward, and leaving behind some things from the early web days we all too often forget when we put on our rose-colored glasses.

We know social media is bad for us. Yeah, there are a few positives, but they get outweighed by the addictive nature, the anti-patterns, the algorithms, and even the people we know in real life who knowingly or unknowingly weaponize it.

I know that when I am over-stressed, social media compounds that stress. I have plenty of other ways to decompress and use my time — books to read, music to listen to and learn, walks and gym sessions to go on, new meals to try making, a blog to write.

It's time to break from the social media tar pits and focus our energy on other things.
